What we do, and what it actually involves

Most nail menus in northern Utah are built around speed: a colour, a shape, out the door. Design work is different, and if you have never booked it before it helps to know what you are asking for. This page is the plain version.

The everyday work

Manicures and pedicures, classic or gel, shaping and cuticle work, colour, and soak-off removal done properly. Most of what happens in the room is this, and it is worth saying so: a salon known for design work still has to be good at a plain gel manicure on a Tuesday.

Fills. Book yours before you need it. A fill at two to three weeks is routine. A fill at five weeks is often a removal and a rebuild, which costs more and takes longer.

Crystal and rhinestone work

Crystals are applied individually and set into a gel or builder layer so they sit flush rather than perched on top. That is the difference between a set that lasts and one that sheds stones in a week.

Placement matters more than quantity. A few well-set stones on two accent nails reads more expensive than a full hand of loose ones. If you want fully encrusted nails, plan on a longer appointment — each stone is placed by hand.

Bring a reference photo. Crystal work is the service where the gap between what someone pictures and what they say out loud is widest.

Chrome and cat-eye finishes

Chrome is a fine powder burnished into a cured gel top layer, then sealed. Cat-eye uses magnetic pigment pulled into a line with a magnet while the gel is still wet, which is why no two are identical.

Both are finishes rather than structures — they go over whatever shape you already have, so they add relatively little time. Both also show ridges, so they look their best over a properly prepped surface.

Hand-painted detail

This is the one that separates technicians. It is painted freehand with a fine brush, nail by nail, and it is priced per nail because that is genuinely how the time works.

If you are choosing where to spend, hand-painted accent nails on two fingers with a simple colour on the rest gives you the most visible result for the least chair time.

Sculpted extensions

Sculpted means the extension is built on a form rather than glued onto a plastic tip. It takes longer and it costs more, and in exchange the apex sits where it should, the sidewalls are even, and the nail is stronger.

If you have had extensions pop off or crack across the stress point before, the shape of the apex is usually why.

How long things last

A word on nail health

Damage almost always comes from removal, not application. Prying, peeling or filing off a set is what thins the plate. Soaking off properly takes longer and is worth it.

If a nail is lifting, discoloured or sore, say so. A responsible technician will not cover it. Enhancement over a nail that is already in trouble traps the problem underneath.

What it costs, and why this page does not have a price list

Every technician at GoodLife Nailz is independent. She rents her station, sets her own menu, her own prices and her own hours, and keeps what she charges. So there is no single salon price list to publish, and a number printed here would be wrong for somebody the day it went up.

Booking

Two practical things. Bring pictures — even a rough camera roll is more useful than a description. And allow more time than you think for crystal and hand-painted sets; rushing that work is how it ends up looking rushed.
